New Funding Boosts Development of Neural Stem Cell Therapy for Progressive MS

Our research project, RESTORE, has received crucial funding from the International Progressive MS Alliance to develop a novel treatment for progressive multiple sclerosis (MS). Led by Dr. Stefano Pluchino of the University of Cambridge and Angelo Vescovi of the University of Milano-Bicocca, our project will focus on laying the groundwork for a future clinical trial using neural stem cell therapy.

Progressive MS is a particularly challenging form of the disease, and current treatments often struggle to halt its progression. Our research offers a promising new approach by exploring the potential of transplanting brain stem cells to reduce the rapid disease progression associated with the condition. These stem cells have the remarkable ability to renew themselves and differentiate into various brain cell types, potentially offering neuroprotective and neurorestorative benefits.

The funded project will concentrate on the essential preparatory work needed to conduct a robust clinical trial. This includes establishing and activating a Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) group, ensuring that the perspectives of those living with progressive MS are incorporated into key decisions throughout our research process.

The International Progressive MS Alliance emphasizes the importance of funding innovative studies that advance the understanding of MS and lead to the development of new treatments. We believe this award exemplifies that commitment, driving forward research that could significantly improve the lives of individuals with progressive MS.
